Annual PiSE STEM/CS Symposium

April 2025

We will be hosting a computer science symposium this winter! Inviting students of all ages and grade levels to present and attend. This symposium is happening all thanks to PiSE's sponsors.

Environmental Engineering and Sustainability: Sub-Themes (Optional)

Crisis Response and Environmental Resilience

Topic ideas
  • Early Warning Systems for Natural Disasters: Present technologies that use IoT, sensors, and AI to predict natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, or wildfires and communicate warnings to communities at risk.
  • Community-Based Water and Energy Management During Crises: Showcase tools that help communities efficiently manage water and energy resources during natural disasters, focusing on prioritization and equitable distribution.
  • Nature-Based Solutions for Flood Mitigation: Discuss the use of natural infrastructure, such as restoring wetlands and creating urban green spaces, to mitigate flooding and protect communities during heavy rainfall events.

Water Resource Management

Topic ideas
  • Efficient Irrigation Systems: Discuss sustainable irrigation practices that help optimize water use in agriculture.
  • Water Purification Technologies: Present innovations in water filtration, desalination, or purification aimed at increasing access to clean water.‍
  • Stormwater Management: Showcase methods for managing stormwater in urban areas to reduce flooding and improve water quality.

Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

Topic ideas
  • Community Solar Projects: Highlight initiatives where communities come together to install solar panels, reducing carbon footprints collectively.
  • Wind or Solar Energy Storage: Discuss advancements in storing renewable energy, including battery technologies and smart grids.
  • Building Energy Efficiency: Present case studies on retrofitting buildings for improved energy efficiency.

Waste Reduction and Circular Economy

Topic ideas
  • Waste-to-Energy Solutions: Showcase technologies that convert waste into usable energy, reducing landfill dependency.
  • Plastic Reduction Initiatives: Present community or business programs aimed at reducing plastic use and improving recycling.
  • Circular Economy Models: Highlight projects that embrace circularity, such as converting by-products into valuable resources.

Ecosystem Restoration and Conservation

Topic ideas
  • Urban Green Spaces: Discuss the benefits of urban green spaces and methods for enhancing biodiversity in cities.
  • Reforestation Technologies: Present tools or techniques that accelerate reforestation efforts.
  • Wetland Conservation: Highlight the role of wetlands in ecosystem health and discuss methods to restore these crucial habitats.
